Along with the benefits of beauty pageants come the disadvantages. Beauty pageants are harmful to young girls in many ways. For example, they cause unnecessary stress on the contestant and her family, there is too much emphasis on appearance, young girls are sexualized in certain parts of the pageants, self-esteem issues are developed because of them, and young girls are forced to lose their innocence during them. Pros and Cons
As with any other controversial issue, there are two different beliefs on the effect of beauty pageants on young children. Some people believe beauty pageants are beneficial to young girls. These people think that pageants increase self confidence, and they put more emphasis on inner beauty. Also, many doors are opened to girls who participate in pageants, such as scholarship opportunities. A final benefit to the involvement of young girls in pageants is the life skills that are taught, such as public speaking, which is helpful later on in life.
Overview
Enter into the world of spray tans, fake eyelashes, and inappropriate clothing. This may be a normal sight for older women, but on young girls it is quite disturbing. This is the world of children's beauty pageants, where young girls are subject to self-esteem issues, unnecessary stress, loss of innocence, the damaging focus on appearance, and the inappropriate sexualizing of children. Are beauty pageants beneficial to young girls? No,they do nothing but cause damage in many areas of a girl's life.
Why are these young girls exposed to such harmful situations? There are no restrictions for the protection of young girls in pageants. It is normal to see toddlers being spray-tanned, or wearing fake teeth to perfect their smiles. Isn't this morally wrong? Are parents compromising a young child's innocence, for the chance of winning a crown? To protect the fragile young girls from a lifetime of self-esteem issues, there should be regulations regarding the use of different beauty products on young girls.
